October 15 marks the beginning of the Annual Open Enrollment Period, a time to review your Medicare plan or enroll in a new one.
The Annual Enrollment Period lasts from October 15 to December 7. Coverage selected during this time will begin in January.
During the next few months it’s important to sit down with a Medicare professional and discuss any changes in your circumstances. If you have Original Medicare, you may want to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan or add a Prescription Drug plan. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you may decide you need to switch to an Original Medicare plan.
It’s important to ask yourself if you are happy with your current plan. Is if affordable? Have your doctors changed? Did you move this year? Have you noticed any gaps in your coverage?
October through December is the time each year to review your plan but changes may be possible at other times. If you encounter a situation where a change is necessary outside the Annual Enrollment Period, you can speak to an agent to see if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
