Prescription Drug Plans (Part D):
Prescription drug plans (Part D) can look straightforward on the surface, but the details matter-especially when it comes to how your costs are calculated. Most plans include a deductible phase, which in 2026 can be as high as $2,100 depending on the structure of the plan. This means you pay out-of-pocket for your medications until that deductible is met, after which the plan begins sharing the cost. What many people don’t realize is that only purchases processed through your actual Part D plan count toward satisfying that deductible.
This is where discount programs like GoodRx can unintentionally work against you. While they may offer a lower price at the pharmacy counter in the moment, those transactions typically do not get reported to your Medicare drug plan. As a result, the money you spend using these discounts does not apply toward your deductible or overall out-of-pocket maximum. Over time, this can delay your progress through the coverage phases and potentially increase your total annual cost. In many cases, it’s more strategic to use your Part D coverage — even if the upfront price is slightly higher — so that every dollar contributes toward reducing your long-term expenses.
Wishing you a healthy and happy June!
