What to do if you missed your Annual Open Enrollment

Dec 21, 2020 | Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Annual Enrollment, Medicare Enrollment Periods

Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment period ran from October 15 to December 7.  If you missed that deadline here are some things to know: If you have an existing Medicare Advantage Plan you can still make changes. A special Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs from January 1 to March 31. During this time you can switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan or revert to Original Medicare and a Prescription Plan if you choose. There are a lot of choices when it comes to Medicare Advantage plans and a lot of benefits to these plans as well. Make sure before you make a change that you sit down and discuss these options with a trusted advisor.

Make a change when you find a better plan

Medicare has a system that rates Medicare Advantage, Medicare Cost and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans every fall. If you find a plan that fits your needs and is rated five stars (the best possible score) you can change to that new plan. This change can only be made once per calendar year.

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period

Special circumstances qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. If you kept your insurance through an employer but are no longer employed, you have some extra time to enroll in Medicare. You may also qualify if you moved to a new address and need time to locate new doctors. If your current Medicare plan changes coverage you also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

You could benefit from a Medigap plan

Medigap plans are sold to supplement Original Medicare plans. A six-month Medigap Open Enrollment begins the month you are both 65 and older and also enrolled in a Medicare Part B plan. You can also find these policies outside that open enrollment period but you may end up paying more.

The Open Enrollment Period is the best time to review and make changes to your Medicare plans

During that period you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Prescription plan (Part D), change the plan you currently have or change to an Original Medicare plan (Parts A and B). If you’re eager to make some changes but unsure how now that the Annual Enrollment Period has ended, sit down with an experienced agent today to walk you through your options.
